[текст на русском ниже]

In English

Nofollow from Home is a WordPress plugin which adds rel=nofollow to all external links only in your posts, and only on your home page. It means these same links will not have this attribute when you post slips onto the 2nd page, or when displayed in Categories or Archives pages, or when the post is displayed as a single post.

Why do this? To be very brief, Google doesn’t count links that have “rel=nofollow” attribute. It means that all external links on your home page that do NOT have this attribute will get a share of your PageRank which distributes among all external links of a page. (If you don’t know what I’m talking about here, you most likely don’t care for this plugin, and don’t need to waste your time reading the rest of this post. Spend your valuable time better – read my blog :) you just might learn something new about Russia).

Before I continue, I want to make one thing clear: I totally agree that back links to the sites we use to get usefull information should be open and free. That’s exactly why this plugin does NOT save rel=nofollow to the database, and keeps them open on all pages but one — your Home page. I also believe in following: We spend a lot of time and effort to make our websites visible to public. And when we decide to make another website, or when our friends decide to settle in the cyberspace, we have a right to help ourselves or our friends to become visible on the internet.

If you have links on your home page (like I do) to your other projects, or to your friends’ projects, or just to people who were nice enough to place a link to your site, you’d want to maximize the weight of PR value you’re passing on to these sites, because you too are a nice person, right? Keep your home to yourself and your friends. The other links can still feel you hospitality on your other pages.

Usage:

  1. Edit domain name (change to your domain name) in sochi_parse_external_links
  2. Upload setnofollow.php to plugins location (wp-content/plugins/)
  3. Activate in administration panel

This plugin was tested and works with WordPress versions 2.0.5 – 2.6

This plugin is free. I would greatly appreciate a link back to this site ( http://www.sochi-travel.info/ ) or this post if you use it on your website.

  2. Залейте файл setnofollow.php в папку с плагинами (wp-content/plugins/)

    Hi,
    I have downloaded your plugin.

    However, I don’t know where to insert the domain name. can you please be more specific?

    Any other relevant plugins that can manage my nofollow tag or add them automatically?

    Thanks,

    pat, on line 54: “… != “sochi-travel.info” && …”, just change sochi-travel.info to your domain name.

    no its not for the sidebar. for the side bar i modified one of the wordpress functions that renders the sidebar list (don’t remeber which one of the top of my head), to change one of the rel= attributes im not normally using, but which is one of the attributes you can set when adding a link in WordPress admin panel, to rel=nofollow.

    for example, when i add a link to my sidebar that i don’t want to leak PR to, i set it rel=muse in the WordPress. but the changes i made to its code will automatically convert muse to nofollow. however, this attribute for the sidebar links stays throughout the site, not just the from page, as the plugin works.

    you should search WordPress site, they have a bunch of different nofollow plugins. my plugin works in WP 2.1, however there might be new APIs that can help developers to deal with sidebar links, and maybe now there’s no need to hack to WP code…

    Is that in my proper domain name?

    i.e. change “sochi-travel.info” to “http://www.mydomain.com” ?

    Thanks,

    Hi Erik,
    Ricky Dearman here and i would like to ask a question about siloing/plugin. I have recently purchased semiologic which has just had a new plugin (silo plugin). Now i have read the posts above and cannot picture the structure of what as been discussed. I guess i am more of a visual person (some may say stupid;-) so is it, or would it be possible for you to draw/power point something (is this asking for to much?) You see, i cannot picture it when using word press, how this is done. Like i said i need visual with the content. I have ‘the master plan’ by charles heflin which is just about silioing (very good by the way) and really believe in this way to market. In the master plan there are (which i know) different silo structures based on what level you are at, It has just come to me Erik, it may be because i do not know how to or my way around semiologic or word press? Yeah i want to know how to put together a siloed word press blog (with pictures;-) Thank you for your time in this query, oh by the way, any software etc mentioned in my post to you is purely honest, i am in no way affiliated with them. It is not a cheap shot.
    Warm Regards or Paceba (my partner to whom we have 2 children, is Russian) Went last year for the first time, Beautiful place.

    The official claim is that links with the rel=nofollow attribute do not influence the search engine rankings of the target page. In addition to Google, Yahoo and MSN also support the rel=nofollow attribute.

    i think it helps indexing…

    Hey Duke! You didn’t pick the best thread for travel talk (this is the only non-Sochi related post on the whole blog :-)), so I emailed you the contacts for travel agent, and some ideas on what to do. It was a good question and I’ll try to make those ideas in a little post later.

    Thx for your plugin – with a site with many subdomains, e.g. a wordpress MU site, can we set this for domain:

    *.domain.com

    where any subdomain will be affected by the plugin?

    Steven, I don’t know how WP MU plugins works, but if it works the same way as stand alone WP, than you shouldn’t need to change anything extra in the plugin code — the sochi_get_domain_name_from_uri() will return “domain.com” weather the input has subdomain or not. so if your ancor’s uri is

    http://domain.com/link.html
    http://user.domain.com/link.html
    http://firstname.lastname.domain.com/link.html

    etc…, the plugin still only checks for domain.com, which means all subdomains will be affected and “nofollow” should be added to any of these links.

    Hi Erik,

    how difficult would it be to have this plugin nofollow external links in all posts? This sounds bad but I am thinking of a user generated content kind of thing and do not want to deal with people wasting my time by trying all kind of trickeries.

    There would be a profile page and those links could be followed (and that’s why I ask for posts not throughout the blog) but that is not an urgent feature.

    António, try to comment out line 69 (place two forward slashes // in the beginning of the line).

    so,
    if (is_home())
    becomes
    // if (is_home())

    this should add nofollow to all external links in posts where ever they are. give it a try.
